Rep. La Chica and Senator Rhoads championed SB2687, a groundbreaking law aimed at curbing the spread of deceptive and fraudulent deep fakes during election periods. Deep fakes—manipulated images, audio, or video that falsely portray individuals—are now prohibited from reckless distribution or agreements to distribute, with certain exceptions. The law also establishes criminal penalties for distributing materially deceptive media.
View Bill DetailsWhile Rep. La Chica may not have authored this bill, she was instrumental in getting this legislation passed. SB975, now Act 62, enacts comprehensive regulations on e-cigarettes. As many of you know, Hawaii has a serious youth vaping epidemic, and Rep. La Chica cried tears of joy when the bill passed out of conference as it took the bill 9 years to pass. On June 6 2023, Governor Green signed SB975 into law.
